That is why when you ask people to list Classic Rock songs in some shape or form, you cannot complain when they list songs from bands you don't think fit that term, because it's way too broad and subjective. Hard Rock is a genre, Metal is a genre, Folk Rock is a genre, Blues Rock is a genre, Punk Rock, Glam Rock is a genre, Progressive Rock is a poorly defined and unspecific genre, Psychedelic Rock is a genre, but Classic Rock is not a genre. Sure there are certain similarities one can pick out that are common in a lot of these bands, but those are just products of music being created in the same time period, it's impossible to not be influenced by fellow musicians. What do The Who, Queen, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and The Grateful Dead have in common? Very little other than the fact that they were very popular in a similar time period and remain very popular to this day.
You don't see people trying to classify "classic movies" as a genre of films or "classic novels" as a specific genre of writing, that would sound ridiculous. That's why it's "classic." I don't know why this bizarre phenomenon has developed in music, because it doesn't occur anywhere else. For all intents and purposes it really is just a broad collection of rock music from the 60s and 70s that remains popular to this day.
